5 tips for gravel bike riders
24/10/2024
Ready to leave the paved roads behind and go on an adventure with your gravel bike? Fantastic! Our colleague Roel is a gravel enthusiast and is happy to share a few tips to help make your ride a success:
1. Keep your eyes ahead
Exploring off-road paths can take you to beautiful, often remote places. But be prepared — gravel surfaces can change quickly. It’s essential to always look a bit further ahead so you can spot obstacles in time and respond smoothly. If you only look down at your front wheel, you’ll often react too late.
2. Bring enough water
A gravel bike usually has plenty of mounting points for accessories — and that’s no coincidence. Once you’re off-road, you’ll be surprised how much water you’ll need. Especially on remote routes, it’s hard to predict where you’ll find clean drinking water. So make sure you carry enough to stay hydrated during your ride. Bringing an energy bar or gel is also a good idea.
3. Stay relaxed
It may sound obvious, but gravel roads aren’t as smooth as the paved roads you might be used to. It’s a natural reaction to tense your arms and legs when riding over rough terrain. But try to stay as relaxed as possible. You want to absorb the vibrations rather than fight them. Staying loose helps you stay in control of your bike and makes the ride more enjoyable. It may feel strange at first, but over time it’ll become second nature.
4. Stay seated — even when climbing
Loose surfaces mean less traction, especially on climbs. Climbing out of the saddle can cause your rear wheel to spin and disrupt your momentum. It’s better to stay seated, keep your weight evenly distributed, and pedal smoothly — it’ll help you conquer steep climbs with better efficiency.
5. Sign up for an event
Gravel racing is for riders of all levels. Whether you want to compete or simply challenge yourself, there’s a gravel event out there for you. It’s not just about crossing the finish line — it’s about fun and community. Consider taking part in events like Plug Plug Gravel or Café Coureur Lumberjack to share your passion with like-minded riders. An unforgettable experience. Enjoy the ride!
