Discover Belgium's beautiful cycling routes! In this article, we share everything you need to know about the most beautiful trails in our country, and give handy tips for an unforgettable cycling experience

Where would I go on a cycling vacation?

Each province has its own character and attractions. We list for you the most beautiful and popular routes:

  • Are you an avid cyclist? Then the Flemish Ardennes are highly recommended because of the many slopes. You can do all the climbs of the Tour of Flanders in this region. Feel like a real cyclist on a cycling vacation in this region.
  • For the same reason, we can also recommend the Ardennes in the French language region. True nature lovers feel like God in France here.
  • Do you like well-equipped bike trails and hospitality? Then you’ve come to the right place in Limburg! You can Cycle through the Water in Bokrijk, Cycle through the Trees in Hechtel-Eksel, discover the Lommel Sahara and take a look at the impressive mining heritage in Genk, Beringen, Maasmechelen, Houthalen and Heusden-Zolder. In short: a good mix between nature & culture!
  • Would you like to visit the province of Flemish Brabant? Then you can take the 34-kilometer Horst Route. You cycle past Vlierbeek Abbey with numerous works of art and Horst’s water castle. The route takes you back to Leuven during the Middle Ages. Are you a wine lover? Then you should definitely visit the Hageland Visitor Center in Wezemaal to get an idea of viticulture in the region.
  • Last but not least: The super popular coastal cycling route. West Flanders has no fewer than 10 coastal municipalities, each with its own characteristics: Knokke-Heist, Zeebrugge, Blankenberge, De Haan, Bredene, Ostend, Middelkerke, Nieuwpoort, Koksijde and De Panne. You can bike down the 71-meter coastline from De Panne to Knokke-Heist or vice versa. Do you complete the course in one day?

How do I prepare for a cycling vacation?

A handy checklist:

  • Will you start from a central point, or will you travel on from different locations each time?
  • Do you plan your overnight stays in advance, or do you look for places to sleep on-the-go? In that case, it is important to estimate the distance and time per day. Remember that you are on vacation and take plenty of time for sightseeing and a terrace every now and then.
  • How will you take the bike(s)? Purchase a good bike carrier that will allow you to transport your bikes safely in good time. You can also choose to rent the bikes locally, but then you can’t be sure you’ll get comfortable bikes. It is especially important that your bike has the right frame size. And don’t underestimate the importance of a properly adjusted saddle, handlebars and pedals.
What should I bring with me on a cycling vacation?
  • To avoid saddle sores, it’s best to put cycling shorts with chamois in your suitcase.
  • Buy a GPS unit or at least a sturdy holder that allows you to attach your cell phone to your handlebars. That way you make sure you don’t have to stop to find your way every time.
  • Always wear a helmet! A bicycle helmet is only mandatory in Belgium if you ride a speed pedelec. For other cyclists, it is not mandatory, but recommended. In any case, it will protect you better in the event of a fall.
  • Cliché, but oh so important: don’t forget sunscreen for hot weather and a rain and wind jacket for the less summery days. We are still talking about Belgium, so we can count on changeable weather. 😊
  • A bicycle pump and a multi-tool to make minor repairs always come in handy.
  • Drink and eat enough before and during cycling to avoid a sugar dip. On long rides, it is best to drink a sports drink.
