7 helpful tips for healthy employees

25/10/2024

The health of your employees is important. Healthy employees are more focused and take fewer sick days. Which raises the key question: as an HR professional, how can you encourage a healthy lifestyle among your staff? Here are a few tips.

1. Encourage sustainable commuting

Public transport, car, bike, shared scooter… there are so many ways to get to work. According to a survey by Acerta, last year, one in three commuters was made by bike in Belgium. Some cycled the entire journey, while others combined cycling with public transport or the car.

The bike is therefore on the rise in a big way. E-bikes (incl. speedbike) and race bikes are particularly popular. That is why more and more companies are introducing bike leasing plans. By offering bike leasing as an employer, your employees can acquire a bike in a tax-efficient way. The benefit to the employee amounts to about 40%. And that includes maintenance, insurance, roadside assistance and a replacement bike!

If the leasing cost is offset against the employee’s gross salary, it is typically cost-neutral for the employer as well. That’s what you call a win-win!

2. Encourage more exercise

It has long been known that sedentary jobs are bad for the health. Some even call it the “new smoking”. It’s therefore time to get your employees moving more.

Alternating between sitting and standing is one way to reduce the amount of time spent each day. This means getting up every half hour to, for example, take a walk while talking on the phone, go ask your colleague something or play with the office dog. This has a positive effect not only on physical health, but also on productivity and concentration.

Do you make a lot of short trips during the working day? Try leaving the car behind and taking the bike instead. Bike is a good way to make your employee move!

3. Sports together

It also helps to set a common goal. For example, try walking 1,000 km collectively as a team within a single month. You can use an app like Strava to compile all of your employees’ activities into a group. Does your team consist of competition beasts? Then turn it into a weekly challenge.

At Cyclis Bike Lease, we regularly exercise together. We’ve already organised a challenging bootcamp and once walked from our old office in Beringen to Scherpenheuvel. This is not only good for fitness, but also for team spirit. Time enough to have a chat with each colleague.

4. Provide healthy snacks for your employees

Do you already offer snacks to your employees at work? If so, it’s worth considering swapping them out for healthier alternatives. For example, you could provide a weekly fruit basket for the whole team. There are also nut- or oat-based bars and chips. The easiest option is to contact a company that comes in monthly to restock your healthy snack selection for your employees.

5. Pay attention to workplace ergonomics

Poor posture at work can lead to chronic physical complaints. By paying close attention to your employees’ posture, you can avoid these kinds of problems. Make sure to have a conversation with your staff about this as well. They are often in the best position to indicate where improvements need to be made.

A few quick wins:

  • Provide an adjustable chair
  • Ensure the feet are properly supported
  • For office work, provide two screens with adjustable height settings

6. Light and ventilation

There is nothing quite as dispiriting as working in a dark room. Just think about your mood and energy levels during the dark winter months. Make sure your workspace benefits from plenty of natural light. Ideally, every workstation should have a view outside.

Your brain also craves fresh air. Prevent headaches with a good ventilation system. Don’t have one? Simply opening the windows and doors works wonders. Fresh air also lowers CO2 levels in your room, which slows the spread of viruses. Isn’t that something we all wanted to avoid?

7. Plants, plants, plants

Plants and flowers are beautiful. They give your office a welcoming, homely feel and create the sense of working surrounded by nature. What’s more, plants purify the air and add moisture to it, with of which do wonders for concentration.
