Around 32% of Belgians cycle to work

In 2023, 32% of Belgian employees used a bike for their commute: either for the entire journey or for a part of it. This is according to a BeMob survey by the FPS Mobility. It marks an increase compared to 2019, when 29% of Belgian employees cycled (partly) to work.

“The systematisation and increase of the per-kilometre allowance for daily cyclists, combined with the removal of the cap on the employer contribution, clearly provide an effective incentive for using the bicycle to commute,” said Minister Gilkinet.

Other BeMob surveys show that more than half of Belgian adults (57%) are cyclists. However, there are significant regional differences. In Flanders, 75% of residents cycle, compared to 37% in Brussels and 31% in Wallonia.

People in Flanders and Brussels mainly use their bikes for practical trips, such as commuting, running errands or going to a hobby. Walloons tend to cycle more for leisure.

Electric bikes are also gaining popularity: the number of users rose from 24 to 28% in just one year.
