Bicycle leasing for government and education personnel
25/09/2024
Cycling to work is something we fully support! This is proven by our annual ‘#icycletowork-campaign’. From 2025, federal civil servants and education staff can also benefit from coming to work in a healthy, environmentally friendly and economical way thanks to bicycle leasing! If you work in education or for the federal government, Cyclis Bike Lease will soon offer you a simple and attractive way to lease a bike through your employer. But how does that work exactly?
For civil servants, leasing a bicycle will be possible starting in 2025. This initiative is designed to encourage the use of bicycles for commuting to work, contributing to a healthier and more environmentally friendly society. You can finance your (electric) bicycle with your year-end allowance. Although the initiative is still in the start-up phase, behind the scenes they working hard to develop it. They are drafting and launching the specifications, awarding the contract to a company, and integrating the bicycle leasing plan into various HR processes.
What about teaching staff?
Teaching staff, including teachers, secretarial staff and cleaning staff, will also have the opportunity to lease a bicycle. Starting in 2025, they can exchange part of their year-end bonus for a bicycle. This is part of Flemish Education Minister Ben Weyts’ (N-VA) efforts to make the teaching profession more attractive. However, it is up to school boards to decide whether to participate in this arrangement.
Why bicycle leasing?
Bike leasing through Cyclis Bike Lease is attractive because it is tax advantageous, it can be up to 40% more advantageous than private purchase. A leasing with Cyclis Bike Lease also includes numerous additional benefits such as: insurance, breakdown assistance, maintenance budget, one year extra warranty on top of the manufacturer’s warranty, a replacement bike in case of an insurance accident and 24/7 support. If you regularly use your bicycle for (part of) your commute, the benefit is exempt from taxes and social security contributions. This means you have more budget than if you were financing the purchase yourself.
Suppose you have a gross year-end bonus of 2,150 euros and you want to buy a new bicycle. If you finance it yourself, you will be left with a net of only 1,050 euros after taxes, a limited budget. However, if you choose bike leasing through your employer, you can use (part of) your gross year-end allowance. This results in significant savings. As Michaël Devoldere, spokesman for Minister Weyts, says: “The difference between the gross and net end-of-year premium is so big that you can save a lot by using the system.”
