Pay for your bike by… cycling!

24/10/2024

In Belgium, cycling is increasingly becoming an essential mode of transport. The Covid-19 crisis has reminded us just how precious our natural environment is and how much it deserves to be enjoyed. Since then, bikes have found their place in the daily lives of a growing number of Belgians.
And for those who have taken the plunge and started cycling to work, the benefits are numerous: as well as arriving at work feeling more relaxed and rested, they can claim a reimbursement via the bike allowance. So why not give it a go?

An attractive leasing formula

What is bike leasing?

Bike leasing is a scheme that allows you to obtain a bike (standard or electric) without buying it outright. In practice, the employer provides a bike through a 36-month leasing contract, the cost of which is deducted from the employee’s gross salary, creating a significant tax benefit for both parties. For the employee, it’s an opportunity to acquire a high-quality bike at a lower cost, whilst enjoying included services such as insurance, roadside assistance and maintenance. At the end of the leasing period, the employee can either buy the bike or return it.

At Cyclis Bike Lease, you can choose any bike, directly from the bike shop of your choice. City bikes, e-bikes, (electric) cargo bikes, mountain bikes… the choice is yours!

Why should I lease a bike rather than buy one?

Once you’ve found the perfect bike, Cyclis Bike Lease includes this cost in an ‘all-inclusive’ leasing package (insurance, roadside assistance, maintenance): this means you can save up to 40% compared to buying one privately in a shop.

At the same time, if you cycle to work often enough and your employer pays you a cycling allowance, you can recoup (part of) the net cost of your leased bike or even make a profit… Let us explain.

Paying for your bike… by cycling?

Attractive bike allowance

Employees who cycle to work can benefit from an attractive bike allowance from their employer. The bike allowance is currently €0.37/km. It is therefore well worth swapping the car for a bike on a regular basis. In addition, you also save on certain car-related costs such as fuel, maintenance and insurance…

Do you work far from home?

That’s no longer a problem! With the rise of e-bikes (<25 km/h) and speed pedelecs (<45 km/h), covering longer distances has become a breeze! With a standard e-bike, you can easily cover distances of up to 30 km, and with a speed bike, this figure can even reach 50 km. Employees who cycle to work are thus rewarded: getting paid (thanks to the allowance) to exercise! What more could you ask for?

Cycle highways in Belgium

Furthermore, more and more cycle highways are being built in Belgium. Take, for example, the ‘cyclostrade’ linking Ottignies and Wavre, or the ‘Ring Vélo’ in Charleroi. These dedicated cycle paths allow you to travel from A to B quickly, efficiently and without any hassle.
