More than 21,000 employees cycled to work for the national #icycletowork day
25/09/2024
On April 25, the sixth edition of the national #icycletowork day took place. With this awareness campaign, bike leasing company Cyclis Bike Lease encourages all employees to cycle to work en masse. The event concluded with over 21,000 participants, who together clocked up 481,186 kilometres of cycling joy. This year, the campaign raised money for the charity “A Bike for Everyone”. Together, all cyclists raised €14,055. This project, supported by the Fietsersbond (Cyclists’ Union), helps children, adults, and elderly people who are unable to cycle due to financial, physical, or mental barriers, by giving them access to a bicycle in their neighbourhood, town, or city.
Flemish Minister of Mobility and Public Works: “I fully support an initiative like #icycletowork, organised by Cyclis Bike Lease. According to the latest Mobility Behaviour Survey in Flanders, almost 22% of commuting trips are made by bike. We also see that 24.5% of people live less than 5 km from work, and 45% live less than 10 km away. These figures show that there is still a lot of potential for cycling, which we aim to stimulate through investments in safe and comfortable cycling infrastructure and awareness campaigns. Between 2019 and 2023, we committed funding for more than 1,600 km of new and renovated bike paths.”
At SKF Logistics in Tongeren, the cycling spirit is alive and well. The company has 450 employees, many of whom live within a 15 km radius. “The ideal cycling distance,” says Marijke Vandormael, responsible for compensation and benefits. “Currently, 1 in 3 colleagues leases a bike through Cyclis Bike Lease. Cycling is part of our culture here. Last year, we cycled a total of 235,000 km together! And again this year, we’re proudly taking part in #icycletowork day.”
€14,055 raised for ‘A Bike for Everyone’
The campaign raises funds each year for a good cause. This year, Cyclis chose to support A Bike for Everyone. Together, all participating cyclists raised €14,055. This project by the Fietsersbond supports initiatives that help children, adults, and elderly people overcome financial, physical, or mental barriers to cycling—by providing them with access to a bike close to home. In addition to the first 9 funded bike projects, the Fietsersbond aims to make dozens more possible.
Where are all these cyclists coming from?
#icycletowork is a national campaign. This year, the province of Antwerp takes the lead with 5,570 participants. East Flanders follows with 5,055 cyclists. In third place is West Flanders, with 3,730 cyclists. Limburg counted 2,597 participants, and Flemish Brabant had 2,503. The remaining participants came from other provinces.
