Should I choose a cargo bike or a child seat?

24/10/2024

Cycling with your children is not only a great way to spend quality time and stay fit, but also a practical means of getting them to school, daycare, or other activities. As a parent, you often choose between two popular options: a parent bike or a cargo bike. But which one suits your lifestyle and needs best? Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each option.

The parent bike

A parent bike (often referred to as a “moederfiets” in Dutch) is specially designed for moms (and dads) with young children. These bikes have extra space for child seats and a low step-through frame, making it easier to safely bring your children along. This is a suitable choice once your baby can sit up independently, usually around 9 months old.

Advantages of a parent bike:

  • A longer rear rack allows room for a child seat at the back, giving your child more space and a better view (instead of staring at your back).

  • Slim design makes it easier to park.

Disadvantages of a parent bike:

  • Only suitable for children from around 9 months who can sit up on their own.

  • Limited space.

  • May feel unstable, especially with heavier children.

  • Limited storage space for bags or groceries.

  • Less protection from rain or sun.

The cargo bike: Safe and space for 1–3 children

A cargo bike offers an alternative way to safely transport your little ones starting from 3 months old using a Maxi-Cosi. It’s designed to carry children comfortably from a young age. Plus, with all your kids sitting in front of you, the ride becomes extra fun!

Advantages of a cargo bike:

  • Suitable for children from around 3 months with a Maxi-Cosi.

  • Can carry multiple children, depending on the model.

  • Spacious cargo area for groceries and other items.

  • Always have your children in sight for added fun and safety.

  • Options to add a rain cover or sun canopy for protection against the elements.

  • Some models are even large enough to transport up to 6 children!

Disadvantages of a cargo bike:

  • The extra weight makes it slower to accelerate and harder to brake quickly.

  • Takes up more space and has a wider turning radius than a parent bike.

In summary

Both parent bikes and cargo bikes are designed to offer you and your children comfort, fun, and safety during your rides. Your choice depends on your personal preferences and daily needs. Will you go for the slim agility of a parent bike or the space and coziness of a cargo bike? Either way, cycling joy is guaranteed.
