Authentic Portugal

Most travelers flock to the western Algarve, to the tourist shores of Albufeira and Vilamoura. But this trip took them first to the less crowded area in the East, to discover authentic Portugal by bicycle. There they spent the first few days cycling over the hills and among the vast orange groves and old farms. They were very adventurous and brisk rides in which they totally absorbed the wonderful charms of the Algarve. They also explored the small and authentic villages by bike, where they were completely absorbed by the culture and history of Tavira and Olhão. They cycled an average of 50 to 60 km daily, which was not so easy because the cycling roads were not always so good.

Must-do: the coast of Algarve

In the second part of the cycling vacation, they explored tourist villages and the coast. The views of the entire coastline from the bike were fantastic! The coast of the Algarve region contains the most beautiful beaches and magnificent jagged cliffs. They found a wealth of fruit orchards, small vineyards, and cozy hamlets in the inland villages they had entered.

The scenery was beautiful at every moment, both inland and the rock formation on the coast. “To dream away at!” They also had fantastic weather, about 27 degrees daily.

For the first part of the week, they stayed at Quinta dos Poetas, a typical Portuguese country house with pool located in a quiet village. During the second part, they stayed at the top B&B, Casa Bela Moura, operated by Flemings.

A cycling vacation to remember

It turned out so well that Wendy and her partner are heading back to Portugal again in 2021. Then they go exploring by car to visit even more dispersed villages. But this cycling vacation was one to remember.
