Traffic rules for cargo bikes

24/10/2024

Cargo bikes are growing in popularity in Belgium and are becoming a common sight on the roads – we can even speak of a real trend. In 2023, nearly 9,590 cargo bikes were sold, which is an increase of almost 800% compared to the previous year. At Cyclis, we’re not surprised by this surge. Cargo bikes offer an eco-friendly alternative and are incredibly useful for transporting children, groceries, and much more. However, just like any other vehicle, there are specific traffic rules that apply when using a cargo bike. Here’s what you need to know:

Speed limits

A cargo bike is considered a bicycle in Belgium, which means you are allowed to ride on bike paths and in 30 km/h zones. Outside these areas, the general speed limit of 50 km/h applies.

Right of way

As a cyclist, including cargo bike riders, you must give priority to traffic coming from the right, unless indicated otherwise.

Loading and unloading

When loading or unloading goods or children, you must always ensure traffic safety. Park in a safe place and watch out for other road users.

Use of bike paths

If a bike path is available, you are required to use it. If not, you may ride on the road.

Seat belts for children

In Belgium, children under the age of 3 must be secured in a child safety system while in a cargo bike. Children aged 3 to 8 or shorter than 1.35 meters must also be secured and should sit in a designated child seat.

Helmet use

Wearing a helmet is not mandatory for adults on a cargo bike, but it is strongly recommended for everyone.

Parking and stopping

Only park or stop your cargo bike in designated areas. Avoid obstructing other road users.

Use of turn signals

If your cargo bike is equipped with turn signals, you are required to use them when making a turn.

Two-wheeled cargo bikes

If your cargo bike has two wheels, you must follow the regular traffic rules for bicycles.

Three- or four-wheeled cargo bikes

If your cargo bike has more than two wheels, you are allowed to use the bike path if the width of your bike (including load) does not exceed 1 meter (article 9.1.2.1°, paragraph 4 of the Belgian traffic code), even if your bike is powered by an auxiliary motor. However, you are not obligated to use the bike path – you may also ride on the road.

Cargo bikes offer a practical and eco-friendly way to transport yourself, your children, and your goods. Follow these rules, respect the general traffic code, and enjoy the ride!
