Useful tips for cleaning your mountain bike

24/10/2024

You’ve just finished a tough ride with your mountain bike, and now it’s covered in mud and dust. No worries – we’ve got the perfect guide to get your bike sparkling again in just 15 minutes. Follow these steps and cleaning will become an easy routine task.

Step 1: Clean the chain and gears

Start by rinsing your mountain bike with water to remove the biggest chunks of dirt. This works especially well if you’re using biodegradable cleaning products.

Spray the degreaser directly onto the chain and gears. Use a brush to scrub off stubborn grime. You can also pour the degreaser into a small container and apply it to the drivetrain with a brush.

Step 2: Clean your mountain bike with bike cleaner

While the degreaser is doing its job, spray the entire bike with a bike cleaner. Let it soak in for 2 to 3 minutes – it’ll do an amazing job loosening up the dirt.

Use a brush for tough spots and scrub the bike with a cleaning mitt. If your bike is mostly dusty or sandy, you can skip straight to the next step.

Step 3: Rinse the bike

Grab your garden hose and spray down your bike thoroughly. You can use a soft or strong spray, but avoid using a high-pressure washer. You’ll see the dirt wash right off.

Step 4: Drying

Dry your bike in three steps:

  • Use a soft microfiber cloth to dry easy-to-reach areas.

  • Use a compressor with an air gun to blow dry hard-to-reach parts like the cassette, gears, and brake calipers.

  • Wipe down the entire bike with a clean cloth.

Also dry your chain thoroughly. Let the chain rotate while you hold a cloth to it to remove any excess oil.

Optional tip: Finish & protect

Want your bike to shine and be protected like new? After cleaning, apply a protective wax. This will help protect against rust and scratches.

Step 5: Lubricate the chain

Lubricate your chain with oil or wax, depending on your preference. This keeps it running smoothly and protects against rust and moisture. Wipe the sides of the chain clean to remove any excess lubricant.

And that’s it! You’ve cleaned your mountain bike in just 15 minutes. You can make it as detailed as you like, but this routine will keep your moving parts clean and ready for your next adventure.

Bonus tip: Washing your cycling gear

If your cycling clothes are also dirty, rinse them off with a hose before putting them in the washing machine. Don’t use fabric softener on synthetic gear and wash at 30°C. Then hang it up to dry. Your mountain bike and gear are now ready for more adventure!
