Which type of bike suits me best?

25/10/2024

With Cyclis Bike Lease, you have access to a wide range of bikes of all types and categories which means you’re sure to find one that meets all your requirements. The good news is that the possibilities are endless. But how do you choose the type of bike that will meet all your needs? Our handy bike selection guide can help. It all starts with one question: what will you mainly be using your bike for?

E-bike

Thanks to its pedal assistance, the e-bike is suitable for both commuting and recreational cycling. You can reach speeds up to and including 25 km/h with it. There are some things to consider.

  • Battery

It is best to buy a battery with the largest possible capacity, expressed in watt-hours (Wh). You can extend your battery life with our helpful tips.

  • Motor

With an e-bike, you have a choice between three options;

    • Mid-motor: In general, a mid-motor feels the most natural because it feels like you are exerting more power yourself. Therefore, that type of engine is the most expensive.
    • Front-wheel motor:A front-wheel bike takes some getting used to at first because it seems like you have less control over the bike when cornering.
    • Rear-wheel motor: You generally have few choices in bikes with a rear-wheel motor.
  • Speed bike

Do you live a relatively long distance from your workplace and still wish to work by bike? Then you may want to consider purchasing a speed bike. You can reach speeds up to and including 45 km/h with this type of bike. As its use is subject to specific rules, we have compiled the relevant regulations and our usage guidelines in a dedicated article.

  • E-cargo bike

The popularity of the electric cargo bike has also increased in recent years. Thanks to the electric pedal assistance, you transport your children almost effortlessly.

Race bike

Do you especially want a fast and light bike? In that case, be sure to choose a race bike. You can distinguish a road bike by its curved handlebars and thin tires.

The different types of race bikes:
  • Comfort: This type of race bike is suitable for cyclists who like to ride long distances. You have a straighter seating position on this bike than on a sporty road bike.
  • Lightweight: This is a very light race bike, designed for long climbs. On this bike you sit more sportily than on the comfort type. Do you often cycle in hilly areas? Then this is the bike you need.
  • Aero: Do you plan to ride time trials or races? Then it’s best to choose this type of race bike. The emphasis is on speed rather than comfort.

It is important to choose the ideal frame size for your body. We recommend that you ask your bike dealer for advice on finding the frame size that suits you best.

Finally, you have a choice between a carbon or aluminum frame. A carbon frame is the lightest, the sturdiest and therefore the most expensive. An aluminum frame, on the other hand, can be more easily repaired after a crash.

Mountain bike (MTB)

Do you often cycle on uneven and rough terrain? Then an (electric) mountain bike is the best option thanks to its thick tires with plenty of grip. Moreover, a mountain bike’s suspension catches the shocks of the unpaved road. You can also distinguish the mountain bike by its straight handlebars.

The different types of mountain bikes:
  • Cross Country: This type of mountain bike constitutes the largest segment. This type of bike is suitable for a course that is fast and technical, without too much elevation change.
  • All mountain: These bikes have a full suspension frame and have a bit more suspension travel than cross country models. It is for this reason that they are widely applicable.
  • Enduro or Freeride: This model features more suspension travel, powerful brakes and solid tires. The bike is especially suitable for fast descents in steep terrain.
  • Downhill: Downhill or gravity bikes are all about cycling downhill as fast as possible. The spring travel absorbs the big hits and ensures that you maintain maximum traction even during braking.

Folding bike

Do you only travel part of your commute by bike? Then it’s better to opt for an (electric) folding bike. That kind of bike can be taken on the train but is less known for its comfort.

When buying a folding bike, be sure to pay attention to the strength of the folding points. Need to travel a long distance on your folding bike? Then invest in a model with larger wheels, a sturdy frame and quality clutch. In general, these bikes are designed for cycling short distances.

City bike

A city bike is comfortable and easy to maintain. Therefore, it is a relatively inexpensive bicycle. Don’t live that far from your workplace? Then the purchase of an ordinary city bike will suffice. Even if you occasionally travel short distances by bike, such as for small errands, you can opt for a regular city bike.

Hybrid bike

Choose this bike if you enjoy longer bike rides in your free time. In fact, a hybrid bike is a combination of a city bike and a sports bike. These bikes are lighter thanks to their aluminum frame, so you will suffer less muscle pain.

The hybrid bike category includes: cross hybrid bikes, fitness bikes and trekking bikes.

  • Crosshybrid: This bike most closely resembles a mountain bike, despite the thinner tires. The bike is suitable for commuting, but less so for unpaved terrain.
  • Fitness hybrid: This bike closely resembles a road bike because of its thin tires, sporty frame and derailleur gearing. The bike is also suitable for commuting.
  • Trekking hybrid: This type of bike, like a city bike, has fenders and a luggage rack. Thanks to the derailleur gearing, this bike is suitable for trekking tours.
