All about the cycling landscape in 2023
24/10/2024
Whereas in the past two years there were cries of a shortage of bikes and parts, now there seems to be a surplus. The expensive cost of fuel is pointing people away from bicycles. Employees, on the other hand, are increasingly opting for a more expensive and higher-quality lease bike. Joep Kempen, CEO of Cyclis Bike Lease, looks back to 2022 through his cycling glasses and gives us a glimpse into the near future of bike leasing.
Bike leasing even more popular post Corona
13,000 new employees leased bikes from Cyclis by 2022. A major explanation is that employees had to return to work more often (post corona) and prices at the pump increased. According to recent customer research by Cyclis, 32% biked to work last year because they wanted to save on the high costs associated with a car.
Cyclis also sees the bike leasing landscape for 2023 looking bright. Therefore, 5 more employees are starting in the coming months to continue to properly serve all customers.

Bicycle allowance for all
Starting in May 2023, everyone who cycles to work will receive a bicycle allowance. The maximum tax-exempt amount will also be increased to 0.27 euros per kilometer. The government hopes this will have a positive effect on workers’ health, the environment and traffic congestion. In addition to the tax concession system of bicycle compensation and bicycle leasing, governments are also increasingly focusing on bicycle streets and 30 zones. Everything to make it as pleasant and safe for the cyclist as possible. Although, of course, there is much room for improvement in that as well.
The popularity of the speed bike
Whereas in 2022 speedbikes made up 11% of the Cyclis bike fleet, by January 2023 it will be 16%. With a speed bike, you can cover greater distances and thus perfectly trade your (second) car for a fast bike. You save on fuel costs, of course, AND you pocket a bike allowance. Win-Win!
Professionalization of bicycle dealers
We also see that the bicycle market is becoming more and more professional. Larger bike stores and chains are taking over the small ones, ensuring consistently good service.
One trend that we welcome somewhat less is the fact that manufacturers are selling directly to end consumers. It takes a lot of technical knowledge to sell people a bike that suits them and maintain it properly. We want to help our customers the best we can, and yet that is still done more by the local bike dealer and bicycle technician.
A leased bike for every employee
Our biggest challenge for 2023 is to make everyone happy with a leased bike. Housekeepers and cleaning assistants also want tax-advantaged bike rides to work. We continue to look for solutions to this.
If you have to sum it up, today’s cyclist wants better bike infrastructure and a good, high-performance bike that always works. And if that bike doesn’t work due to a minor defect, they should be able to get into the merchant’s “fast line,” so to speak, for an on-site repair or count on an immediate replacement bike.
We cited it above: bicycle dealers do have a large inventory. So you can quickly jump on the (lease) bike. What are you waiting for?
