The range of your battery depends on several factors such as the size of the battery, the strength of the motor, the selected assistance level and the trail. You can also extend the range of your e-bike by taking a number of factors into account during or before your ride. Cyclis lists five tips on energy-efficient cycling for you.

1. Don’t set your gear too high and pedal fast enough

When the motor is on, you are often tempted to pedal more slowly. Unfortunately, you consume more power that way. It is better to shift down a gear and pedal faster. That way you increase the range of the battery.

2. Do not leave with pedal assistance or set it as low as possible

Just as you don’t set off in third gear with the car, it’s best not to set off with (high) pedal assistance with the bike. After all, that consumes a huge amount of energy. Turn off pedal assistance at standstill or select the lowest pedal assistance.

3. Switch on time

Shift to a lighter gear at a traffic light or at the beginning of a climb. After this, you can shift up to a higher gear again. Maintaining a constant speed is best for your battery, though.

4. Pump up your tires

It is best to keep your tires at maximum pressure (3.5 to 4 bar). This depends on the brand and type of tire and is indicated on the tire sidewall. This way, your battery consumes as little extra energy as possible.

Do you have an electric mountain bike? Then the exact opposite applies and lower air pressure is important. A tire inflated too hard can create high rolling resistance and provide little grip.

5. Don’t carry heavy items

Heavy luggage affects the range of your battery. The heavier the total weight, the shorter the range. So think carefully in advance about what gear you’re all bringing.
