The Do’s & Don’ts of Gravel Biking

Gravel biking is a fun and adventurous way to enjoy nature and improve your cycling skills. Whether you’re a seasoned gravel racer or just getting started, here are some important do’s and don’ts to keep in mind for your next ride.

DO – Know your route

One of the most essential steps for any gravel ride is knowing your route. Check the distance, terrain, and expected conditions in advance. Make sure your route is saved on your GPS or smartphone so you don’t get lost.

DON’T – Start too fast

Don’t go all-out from the start. Gravel biking often requires a more moderate pace than road cycling. Save your energy for the entire ride to avoid fatigue. Make sure to eat and drink enough along the way.

DO – Check your gear

Before you set off, give your bike a thorough inspection. Check tire pressure, brakes, gears, and chain. Be sure to bring spare tubes, tools, and other essentials. Flats and mechanical issues can happen quickly on gravel roads.

DON’T – Neglect maintenance

Regular maintenance is crucial to prevent issues mid-ride. Keep your bike in top condition by routinely checking tire pressure, brakes, and gears. Riding tubeless? Don’t forget to check the sealant level in your tires.

DO – Dress appropriately

Wear clothing that suits gravel biking. A quality helmet is essential for safety. Consider wearing gloves and sunglasses to protect your hands and eyes from flying stones and dust.

DON’T – Ride without a backup plan

Never ride without a backup plan. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return. Bring your phone in case you need help. If you have a GPS device, activate its safety tracking feature. Be prepared for emergencies.

DO – Hydrate and fuel up

Gravel rides can be physically demanding, so stay well-hydrated. Bring plenty of water, and on longer rides, follow a plan: drink or eat something every 30 minutes. Pack energy-rich snacks to keep your energy levels up.

DON’T – Try unfamiliar techniques

Gravel biking can be tricky, especially on rough terrain. Don’t test out new techniques on difficult trails if you’re not confident. Practice on easier routes first before taking on more challenging ones.

DO – Stay alert

Always stay alert while riding gravel. Keep your head up and be ready for changing conditions. Gravel roads can shift quickly with loose stones, sandy patches, or potholes. Staying focused helps you respond safely.

DON’T – Disregard the environment

Leave no trace. Respect nature and take your trash with you. Stick to existing paths to protect the environment. As gravel riders, it’s our responsibility to ride respectfully and preserve the outdoors we love.

DO – Bring extra supplies

Be well-prepared for longer rides. Bring a rain jacket and extra clothing for changing weather, a pump, spare tubes, tire plugs, and repair kits. Don’t forget multitools (with chain breakers and spoke wrenches), a GPS for navigation, a saddlebag or frame bag for your gear, and emergency items like a first aid kit and bike lights.

Gravel biking is a fantastic way to stay active and unwind. With proper preparation and these do’s and don’ts in mind, you’ll be ready to ride with confidence and enjoy your gravel adventure.
